Apple recommends iOS 26.1, urges iOS 18 users to upgrade

Apple is urging iPhone users still on iOS 18 to upgrade by making iOS 26.1 the recommended update in the Settings app. The latest software now appears at the top of the Software Update interface, while iOS 18 updates are moved to an “alternate version” section.

According to MacRumors, the change makes iOS 26.1 more prominent than before. Previously, users had to scroll to find the optional update at the bottom of the page, with iOS 18 remaining the default choice.

Apple stresses that upgrading is optional. “Even with Automatic Updates enabled, major OS upgrades require manual approval before installation can proceed,” the company said. The push comes as iOS 26 introduces the Liquid Glass redesign, which has significantly altered the iPhone interface and prompted some user hesitation.

For now, iOS 18 continues to receive security updates, though Apple may eventually phase out support for devices that can run iOS 26. Users should note that upgrading is permanent, as Apple does not allow downgrades once iOS 26.1 is installed.

Apple has not disclosed adoption numbers for iOS 26, but such figures are typically updated a few months after release. With the new layout, iOS 26.1 is now positioned as the clear choice for iPhone users ready to move to the latest system.
