Abdul Samad Rabiu, chairman of BUA Group, has pledged to honour his $500,000 commitment to the Super Eagles, despite Nigeria’s 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final on Wednesday.
The match remained goalless after 120 minutes, and missed penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the final.
Before the game, Rabiu had promised $500,000 if Nigeria defeated Morocco, with an extra $50,000 for each goal scored. Following the loss, he reaffirmed his pledge on X, calling the donation a “token of appreciation” for the team’s effort.

“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” Rabiu wrote. “Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud. The spirit, passion, and unity you displayed are what truly matter. You left everything on the field, and that is worthy of celebration.”
The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third-place match on Saturday, aiming to secure the bronze medal.
