AFCON 2025: CAF suspends Hakimi, Thiaw, fines Morocco, Senegal

CAF has suspended Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Senegal coach Pape Thiaw following the AFCON 2025 final.

The governing body also fined both Senegal and Morocco for player and staff misconduct during the 1-0 extra-time match in Rabat on January 18.

Thiaw was banned for five CAF matches for “unsporting conduct” and “bringing the game into disrepute.”

Senegal forwards Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were handed two-match bans for “unsporting behaviour towards the referee.” The Senegal Football Federation was fined $615,000 for violations of CAF’s fair play rules.

For Morocco, Hakimi received a two-match suspension, while forward Ismael Saibari was banned for three matches and fined $100,000. The Moroccan Football Federation was fined $315,000 in total for fan misconduct, VAR interference, and stadium issues.

The final was tense. A disallowed goal for Senegal and a Moroccan penalty award led to protests. Thiaw was seen signaling his players to leave the pitch, and most briefly walked off. Sadio Mane convinced the team to return, and Pape Gueye scored in extra time to secure Senegal’s second AFCON title.

CAF said the bans only apply to CAF matches and will not affect preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Thiaw will miss five of six 2027 AFCON qualifiers, while Ndiaye and Sarr will miss the first two matches.
