Ogun: Nurse remanded over death of corps member in alleged abort*on procedure

A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over her alleged involvement in an abortion procedure that reportedly led to the death of a 23-year-old National Youth Service Corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday at the Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, unlawful supply of drugs for abortion, and murder.

Police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, told the court that the offences occurred between January and March 2026 in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. He alleged that the drugs supplied by the defendant contributed to the death of the corps member.

The charge sheet included conspiracy to commit felony, unlawful procurement of abortion by supplying drugs, conspiracy to commit murder, and unlawful killing of Victoria Ariyo through the administration of drugs.

The prosecution requested that the defendant be remanded for 60 days pending legal advice from the Ogun State Director of Public Prosecutions. Magistrate O. Sam-Obaleye granted the request and ordered that Adesanya be held at the Ibara Correctional Centre. The case was adjourned to May 26, 2026.

Police investigations also revealed that the deceased was allegedly in a relationship with Abass Olalekan, an NYSC official in Abeokuta South Local Government, which reportedly resulted in the pregnancy.

Olalekan had earlier been arraigned before another Magistrate Court on charges of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.
