Trump warns Iran against ‘blackmail’ over Strait of Hormuz closure

United States President Donald Trump on Saturday warned Iran against what he described as attempts to “blackmail” Washington following renewed tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump, speaking at a White House event, said the U.S. was engaged in talks with Tehran but would not be pressured by threats linked to the critical oil route.

“We’re talking to them. They wanted to close up the strait again, you know, as they’ve been doing for years,  and they can’t blackmail us,” he said.

He added that more details on the situation would emerge later, stressing that the U.S. was maintaining a firm position. “We’re taking a tough stand,” Trump noted.

The warning followed Iran’s announcement that it had once again shut the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage that handles about one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

The move marks a sharp escalation after earlier signals that the waterway had been reopened, highlighting ongoing uncertainty in the region.

Reports also indicated that Iranian forces fired on vessels attempting to pass through the strait, raising fresh concerns over global energy supply and maritime safety.

The development comes amid continued tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with both sides indicating willingness to negotiate but remaining far apart on key issues.
