Donald Trump has warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to reach a deal before his deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, he said: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”
He added that “maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen,” hinting at a possible last-minute deal.
The U.S. is pushing Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route that has been partly blocked during the conflict.
U.S. forces have already carried out fresh strikes on military targets on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub, according to CBS News. A U.S. official said oil facilities were not targeted.

Iran has warned it will respond if its civilian infrastructure is hit. BBC correspondent Frank Gardner said Tehran signalled it would strike back in Gulf states.
Iranian state media also reported deaths after a strike on a bridge in Kashan. The Israel Defense Forces had earlier warned civilians to avoid train travel.
Missile attacks have continued, with Israel reporting new launches from Iran overnight.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance said talks are still ongoing.
“There’s going to be a lot of negotiation,” he said, while warning the U.S. has “tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use.”
Trump has said he will not extend the deadline, calling Iran’s latest offer a “significant step” but “not good enough.”
