Harry Potter TV series trailer drops, release date revealed

The first trailer for the Harry Potter TV series has dropped, giving fans their first look at a new Hogwarts. HBO said the show will premiere this Christmas on HBO Max, with streaming in India on JioHotstar at the same time.

The series will start with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Season 1 has eight episodes, allowing the story to show more detail than the original films.

“On his 11th birthday, a letter of admittance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens up a hidden world for Harry: one of fun, friendship and magic. But with this new adventure comes great risk as Harry is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past,” said HBO Max.

Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. Adult cast members include John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

The trailer shows Harry’s journey from the Dursleys’ house to Hogwarts. Fans see Hagrid, the Sorting Hat, and Harry’s first Quidditch game.

“Mr Potter, I think we can expect great things from you,” says wandmaker Garrick Ollivander in the teaser.

Some casting choices and J.K. Rowling’s views have sparked debate. Essiedu, who plays Snape, said he is using criticism to fuel his performance.

“I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” he told The Times. “The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate – of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it.”

Original Harry actor Daniel Radcliffe praised McLaughlin.

“I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me. I learned as I went… I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”

John Lithgow defended his participation.

“Her books are clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry.”

HBO’s Casey Bloys said Rowling’s personal views do not affect the series.

“It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. Harry Potter is not secretly being infused with anything.”

The series will cover all seven books over several years. JB Perrette, CEO of Warner Bros Discovery Global Streaming and Games, called it:

“The biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period.”

Fans have already reacted positively to the trailer. One YouTube comment said:

“I’m 37 and I feel like I am home again.”

Another added:

“It’s like stepping back into Hogwarts for the first time all over again.”

With a new cast, detailed sets, and longer storytelling, the series aims to capture both the magic of the films and the depth of the books.
