Nigerian videographer Femi Dapson has ignited online debate after admitting that financial stability played a key role in his pursuit of love with fiancée Simi Sanya.
During The Love and Money Conversation, hosted by Meristem Nigeria, Dapson said he deliberately avoided approaching women early in his career because he felt financially unprepared.
“I know money is important in a relationship, that’s why I didn’t approach Simi till I started making money,” he explained.
He recalled his first encounters with Sanya, noting how his financial situation affected his confidence:
“The first time I met Simi I was still driving one rickety Avalon, but I didn’t talk to her. The second time I saw her at a wedding in Akure, I was already making some money, so that was when I was able to talk to her.”
Describing himself as a “gifter,” Dapson added:
“Love is sweet, but it’s sweeter when there’s money.”
The comments sparked criticism online, with influencer JJ Exclusive calling the filmmaker’s statement a reflection of low self-esteem.
“A man driving an Avalon claiming he lacked financial confidence? That’s low self-esteem,” he tweeted.
“A confident man, even one driving a Corolla or operating a keke, should never be afraid to approach a woman he genuinely likes.”
Social media reactions have been divided. Some users praised Dapson for prioritizing financial readiness, while others argued that genuine confidence shouldn’t depend on wealth.

@realkingivr added: “Driving good cars and having money can attract attention, but it can’t hide low self-esteem.”
@MikeDc0904 commented: “What happens when we remove your money from the relationship? It’s obvious you bought your way in.”
Dapson and Sanya’s relationship milestones include a July 2025 proposal, an introduction ceremony in November 2025, and an upcoming wedding themed #MeetTheDapsons26. On Valentine’s Day 2026, Dapson celebrated his fiancée with two massive billboards at Lekki Toll Plaza.
The conversation continues to trend online, prompting discussions about money, confidence, and the role of financial stability in modern relationships.
