Explosion hits mosque during maghrib prayers in Maiduguri

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, sparking panic among residents.

The explosion occurred at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area, at about 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayers.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately confirm the blast, adding that he was on his way to the scene to assess the situation.

The incident has heightened fear across the city, particularly among residents preparing for the 2025 Christmas celebrations.

Security operatives have since cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and to allow for preliminary investigations into the attack.
