President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic to support the country’s democratic institutions.
The request was contained in a letter read to lawmakers by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio. Tinubu said the planned troop deployment, described as a Peace mission, was in line with Section 5(4) Part II of the 1999 Constitution and followed consultations with the National Defence Council.

He explained that the move became necessary after the Republic of Benin asked for assistance following the attempted military coup there over the weekend.
The Senate referred Tinubu’s letter to the Committee of the Whole for immediate consideration.
