Conditional love: Kano court orders compulsory marriage of two TikTok stars over ‘indecent’ videos

A Kano court order has directed two popular TikTok creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to marry within 60 days after appearing in viral videos considered “indecent” by state authorities.

Magistrate Halima Wali issued the directive on Monday following a complaint by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board, which accused the pair of violating public morality through romantic displays in their social media content.

The court instructed the Kano State Hisbah Board to facilitate the marriage and warned that failure to comply within the stipulated time would amount to contempt of court. The chairman of the Censorship Board was also assigned to oversee the implementation of the Kano court order.

The ruling has triggered widespread debate across the state. While some residents praised it as a move to uphold moral values, others criticised it as an infringement on personal freedom.

Aliyu Salisu of Kofar Nassarawa told press men that the decision “will discourage indecency among youths,” whereas Zainab Ahmed of Hotoro described it as “an overreach of authority,” arguing that morality should not be enforced through coercion.

Before the verdict, Mai Wushirya had been detained over similar allegations of promoting immoral behaviour in his skits, while Yar Guda was questioned by the board’s enforcement team.

As of press time, neither of the two influencers had publicly reacted to the Kano court order, which has reignited discussions about morality, law, and personal freedom in northern Nigeria.
