Ekiti Police Officer and wife die in domestic dispute

A tragic incident on February 18, 2025, claimed the lives of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Leramo Caleb and his wife, Tate, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The violent domestic dispute unfolded in the Ita-Eku area along Igirigiri Road, leaving the community in deep shock.

According to reports, the couple engaged in a heated argument that quickly escalated. Neighbors heard loud shouts and sounds of struggle from their home. Despite attempts to intervene, the conflict intensified. In the end, Leramo Caleb fatally stabbed his wife with a knife. In a final act of violence, he turned the weapon on himself, succumbing to his injuries before help could arrive.

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the tragedy. He stated, “The command is aware of the unfortunate event involving one of our officers and his wife. Investigations are underway to determine what led to this outcome.”

Furthermore, preliminary findings suggest accusations of infidelity played a role. A close family friend, speaking anonymously, revealed that the couple had struggled with marital issues for months.

“They often argued about trust. It’s heartbreaking that it reached this point,” the source lamented.

As a result, this tragedy has sparked discussions about domestic violence and conflict resolution in marriages. Consequently, local community leader, Chief Adewale Ogunleye, stressed the importance of seeking counseling and mediation. “Domestic dispute should never lead to violence. Peaceful solutions always exist,” he advised.

At the same time, concerns are also rising about law enforcement officers’ mental health. Similarly, experts emphasize the need for psychological evaluations and support systems. Dr. Funmilayo Adebayo, a clinical psychologist, explained;

“Officers face high-stress situations daily. Without support, stress can affect their personal lives, sometimes with tragic results.”

In response, the Ekiti State Police Command has pledged to support the bereaved families and conduct a thorough investigation. Therefore, SP Abutu assured, “We are committed to uncovering the facts and taking appropriate action.”

Consequently, this heartbreaking event highlights the urgent need for domestic violence prevention. As a result, communities must encourage open discussions about abuse and provide resources for those in distress. Support groups in Ekiti State have reaffirmed their commitment to assisting struggling individuals through counseling and emergency helplines.

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of two lives. Ultimately, this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the need for compassion, understanding, and peaceful conflict resolution within families.
