Singer Portable Surrenders to Police Amidst Legal Troubles

Singer Portable surrenders to police amidst legal troubles

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has turned himself into the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba. This comes after the Ogun State Police Command declared him wanted on February 18, 2025, over allegations of assaulting government officials.

The officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA) had reportedly attempted to seal his business premises in Iyana Ilogbo due to permit issues, leading to a physical altercation.

Portable’s decision to surrender followed days of public outcry and pressure from law enforcement. A source within the SCID revealed;

“He walked in willingly, knowing that the situation had escalated beyond control. The authorities had given him ample time to cooperate.”

Before his surrender, Portable had posted an emotional video on social media, where he pleaded for understanding and expressed distress over the incident. In the video, he said;

“I am not a violent person. I was only defending my business. Please, let there be mercy.”

The video, which quickly went viral, sparked mixed reactions, with some fans supporting him while others condemned his actions.

This is not the first time Portable has found himself entangled in legal troubles. Since his rise to fame in 2021 with the hit song “Zazoo Zehh,” he has been involved in multiple controversies. In 2023, he was arrested after refusing to honor police invitations over an alleged assault case.

the Ogun State Government has strongly criticized him for his latest actions, describing him as an “unrepentant rascal.” A government official stated, “His repeated disregard for the law is unacceptable. This is not the first time he has been involved in altercations with authorities.”

Legal analysts believe this case could have serious consequences for the singer if found guilty. According to criminal law expert Barrister Olumide Ojo,

“Assaulting a government official is a serious offense. The court will determine the extent of his liability, but Portable must understand that fame does not place him above the law.”

Despite the controversy, some fans believe Portable is being targeted unfairly. His manager, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said;

“Portable is misunderstood. He is passionate about his business and music, and sometimes emotions take over. We hope for a fair legal process.”

As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on whether Portable will face charges or receive leniency. His surrender marks a significant step in resolving the case, but it is unclear if it will lead to immediate legal relief. The music industry and his fan base await further updates on his fate.
