Two alleged killers of Anambra lawmaker escape police custody

A shocking twist has emerged in the investigation of Anambra lawmaker Hon. Justice Azuka’s murder. Two suspects escaped police custody during an operation to track a stolen vehicle receiver. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and immediately launched a manhunt.

Gunmen abducted Hon. Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North 1 Constituency, on December 24, 2024. He was returning home for Christmas. Weeks later, on February 6, 2025, his decomposing body surfaced near the Second Niger Bridge, sending shockwaves across the state. In response, a joint security operation involving police and the Anambra Vigilante Group led to the arrest of nine suspects. Authorities believed they had made significant progress—until the unexpected escape.

However, two detained suspects fled. While addressing the situation, Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga explained, “During an operation to track a key receiver of stolen vehicles, the suspects exploited the situation and escaped.”

Consequently, the revelation sparked immediate concern. Many called for stricter security measures and better oversight of detained suspects.

Meanwhile, police intensified efforts to recapture them. However, growing concerns over security lapses raised urgent questions about how such high-profile suspects could evade custody. In response, legal and security experts demanded more effective handling of criminal cases. They warned that such incidents could severely damage public trust in law enforcement.

Barrister Chuka Nwankwo, a criminal law expert, sharply criticized the situation. He stated;

“This escape highlights serious flaws in the justice system. If murder suspects flee so easily, it raises concerns about law enforcement efficiency.” His statement resonated with many, as public frustration continued to grow.

At the same time, the late lawmaker’s family and supporters renewed their call for justice. Chief Emeka Okafor, a close associate of Azuka, expressed his outrage.

“We are deeply disturbed. Authorities must take responsibility and ensure justice prevails,” he said.

Similarly, community leaders echoed these concerns, urging law enforcement to act swiftly and prevent further setbacks.

As investigations continue, police are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any relevant information that could assist in the re-arrest of the escapees. Notably, the shocking escape has reignited debates on security protocols in handling high-profile criminals. With public pressure mounting, authorities now face an urgent task: restoring confidence in the justice system, tightening security measures, and ensuring that those responsible for Anambra lawmaker Hon. Azuka’s murder are swiftly brought to justice.
