Operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) have arrested a 62-year-old man identified as Muhammad Ujujud for chaining and locking up his 16-year-old daughter, Fatima, in a room for two years.
It was gathered that the Muhammad, who resides in Rinji village in Madobi Local Government Area of the state, locked up the girl as punishment for her refusal to accept a man he forced her to marry.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that some residents of the area alleged that the man also locked his son Shehu in a separate cell in his house but the boy died in detention recently.
A man in the community who spoke to journalists revealed that Muhammad is a dreaded man in the village and known for his severe corporal punishment on his family.
Locals alleged that he rarely fed his captive children.
“He hardly gives them food to eat, they sleep and defecate in just one point,” a neighbour said.
In an interview with DAILY NIGERIAN, one of the sons of Muhammad, who fled the house over the severe punishment from his father, confirmed that his brother Shehu starved to death in captivity.
He added that his mother died a few years ago and his father now lives with their stepmother.
NAPTIP officials have reportedly taken Fatima to a private hospital in Kano where she is currently receiving treatments. In the footage shared on the internet, the teenager was looking pale and sickly as at the time she was set free.
Kano State commandant of NAPTIP, Shehu Umar, confirmed the arrest and detention of the 62-year-old man, saying investigation is currently ongoing.
