You can now renew your Nigerian passport from home, NIS says

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has introduced an online passport renewal system, allowing Nigerians to renew their passports remotely without visiting immigration offices. The system, designed to improve efficiency and convenience, is accessible through a dedicated mobile app and an online portal.

This initiative, which first launched in Canada on November 1, 2024, has since expanded to other countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Italy. The NIS has now rolled out the service to more locations, with full implementation across Nigeria and other countries by early 2025.

Speaking about the development, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, stated;

“This Is a game-changer for Nigerians, particularly those in the diaspora who previously had to travel long distances to renew their passports. Now, you can renew your passport from the comfort of your home.”

The system allows applicants to complete the renewal process remotely. To use the service, individuals must download the NIS Mobile App, available on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store, or visit the official web portal at passport.immigration.gov.ng. After creating an account, applicants provide their National Identification Number (NIN), passport details, and undergo a brief eligibility check.

One of the biggest upgrades is the remote biometric capture. Instead of going to an immigration office to scan fingerprints and take photos, applicants can now do it themselves using their mobile phones.

“For the first time, Nigerians can securely submit their fingerprints and facial recognition data using their mobile devices. This means no more waiting In long lines at the immigration office for biometric data capture,” said an NIS spokesperson.

Many Nigerians have welcomed the initiative, citing its convenience. A Lagos-based businessman, Tunde Oke, who recently renewed his passport through the system, shared his experience:

“This is a huge relief. I used to dread renewing my passport because of the stress. But this time, I did everything from my living room. It was smooth, and I got my passport in a short time,” he said.

The NIS has assured applicants that the platform is secure and adheres to international data protection standards.

With this new approach, the NIS is looking to eliminate delays and make passport renewal as seamless as possible. If you need to renew your passport, now might be the best time to try the new system.
