A woman gave birth inside a Waymo autonomous taxi while traveling to UCSF Medical Center on Monday evening, turning the self-driving vehicle into an impromptu delivery room.
Waymo’s remote monitoring team noticed unusual activity and immediately contacted emergency services. The taxi, however, reached the hospital before an ambulance arrived.
“This is not the first time a birth has happened in one of our vehicles,” a Waymo spokesperson said. “A similar event occurred in Phoenix. While rare, it shows how our technology can safely handle unexpected situations.”

The vehicle was promptly sent for cleaning. The spokesperson added, “Although extremely unusual, some of our newest passengers simply cannot wait for their first ride with Waymo.”
The incident highlights the growing integration of autonomous taxis into city life, emphasizing both safety and emergency responsiveness.
