Rivers: Wike not APC member, has no right to interfere — APC National Secretary

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has no right to interfere in the affairs of the ruling party in Rivers State, insisting that Wike not APC member.

Basiru made the clarification on Monday in response to recent remarks credited to Wike, who warned him to steer clear of Rivers State politics. According to the APC scribe, party records clearly show that Wike not APC member, and as such, he lacks the locus to dabble in internal party matters.

In a statement posted on the official X handle of the APC, Basiru stressed that his comments on Rivers APC affairs were within the scope of his constitutional duties as National Secretary. He noted that his role includes protecting the interests of the party and its members across the country, not just in his home state of Osun.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our records indicate that Minister Nyesom Wike is not a member of our party. Therefore, Wike not APC member, and he has no basis to interfere in our internal affairs,” Basiru stated.

The APC National Secretary explained that his earlier comments followed remarks made by the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom, who allegedly referred to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a “so-called governor” during a recent political gathering in the state.

Basiru maintained that his intervention was aimed at ensuring discipline and mutual respect within the party’s leadership structure, adding that his responsibilities as a national officer cannot be restricted to any single state.

The comments come amid rising political tension in Rivers State, with party stakeholders exchanging sharp words over influence and control ahead of future political engagements.
