The Police Service Commission (PSC) has activated its portal for the recruitment of 50,000 police constables, inviting interested applicants as the PSC and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) commit to a transparent and hitch-free exercise. Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the Commission’s Secretary, announced the commencement of the process in a statement on Thursday, explaining that the recruitment aligns with the PSC’s constitutional duty and President Bola Tinubu’s directive to strengthen national security by increasing police personnel.
Below are five important points about the recruitment:
Categories of entry
The exercise covers both General Duty and Specialist categories. General Duty applicants will be recruited as police constables. The Specialist category features roles in medical services, including medical assistants; transport services such as licensed drivers, mechanics, auto-electricians and dispatch riders; and EOD–CBRN units that require forensic assistants, drone and robotics handlers, general EOD-CBRN operatives and administrative or welfare support workers.

Other specialist units include the K9 section for dog handlers, the Mounted Troop for horse riders, and the Marine unit, which is seeking deckhands, launch quartermasters and underwater welders. Technical roles are available for electrical and electronic technicians, lathe operators, divers, marine engineer assistants and boat mechanics. Additional artisan positions include electricians, plumbers, refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians, generator repairers and welders. The Commission is also recruiting tailors, communication technicians, IT specialists and musical equipment handlers.

Applicants must be Nigerian by birth and be physically and mentally sound. They must also be of good character, free from financial embarrassment and have no criminal record. Two character referees are required. General Duty applicants must be between 18 and 25 years old, while Specialist applicants must not exceed 28 years. Female applicants must not be pregnant during the recruitment process.
Candidates must be free from physical deformities, such as defective sight, knock knees, bow legs, bent knees, flat feet, fractures or amputations. Male applicants must have a minimum height of 1.67 metres, while female applicants must be at least 1.64 metres tall. Male applicants must also have an expanded chest measurement of no less than 86 centimetres (34 inches).

General Duty applicants must hold GCE Ordinary Level, SSCE, NECO or equivalent certificates with a minimum of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings. Specialist applicants must have at least four credits, including English and Mathematics, also in not more than two sittings, and must show at least three years of experience in the relevant field. Trade test certificates and professional qualifications are compulsory where applicable.
