A Nigerian driver has gone viral after he stood up to Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) officials and used a court ruling to avoid being stopped on the road.
The incident happened along GRA Stadium Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In the video, the motorist confronted the VIO officers and insisted they had no legal right to stop him. He cited a Federal High Court judgment, which he said was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2025.
According to the driver, the ruling prevents VIO officers from carrying out roadside checks, impounding vehicles, or issuing fines on public roads.
After a brief argument, the officers eventually backed down and allowed him to drive away.
The clip has triggered mixed reactions online.

Another user, @IFredHammond, disagreed, saying: “That’s an offence not a crime, all crimes are offence but not all offence is a crime , the VIO committed an offence”
However, @Iam_yemie warned the driver may have misunderstood the ruling, writing: “The VIO is actually right, they work for the state government and the court order was that trend last year was for Abuja alone

Sharing a similar experience, @Akunn_a said: “That was almost the same thing I did to them last week, even though my papers were complete, I told them I am not obliged to comply with their illegal requests”
The video has continued to trend as Nigerians debate the legality of VIO roadside operations and the need for citizens to know their rights.
