A 24-year-old secondary school dropout, Jessica Anthony, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command after confessing to a plot where she and her friend, Ada, attempted to hire armed robbers to steal gold jewelry from her boyfriend.
Jessica, currently in custody in Asaba, admitted that her intention was to sell the stolen items to settle her sister’s bills. “I asked the bad guys to go there to collect his gold.
They would have sold it and given the money to me,” she stated, adding that she “will feel bad if it were her boyfriend who did the same to her.”
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, revealed that the couple had recently reconciled in December 2025.
He noted, “In fact, they were intimate December last month. Lo and behold, she (Jessica) in connivance with her friend, went to one of the black spots we have in Warri trying to locate any of the bad guys.” The plan backfired when Jessica unknowingly approached a community leader who works closely with law enforcement.
“Am not sure if she told them the person was her boyfriend. But unfortunately for her, the person she met happened to be the leader of that community who has been helping the police to ensure that these bad guys are flushed out of the community,” Edafe explained.
After being alerted to the plot, the boyfriend instructed the community leader, “Please, just play along.”
Following this lead, the “robbers” requested N65,000 for tools to carry out the crime. Jessica transferred N50,000 via POS and provided N15,000 in cash before personally leading the group to her boyfriend’s estate to identify his house. Upon their return from the estate, the boyfriend alerted security, leading to her arrest.
The victim revealed that the jewelry targeted included a gold bracelet worth N4.2 million and another piece valued at N8.9 million. Expressing his betrayal, he said, “I feel heartbroken because I never expected it from her.”
