Travellers along the Okada–Benin were terrified on Thursday, January 22, 2026, as armed gunmen opened fire along the Okada–Benin highway, bringing traffic to a complete standstill and leaving motorists stranded in fear.
Eyewitnesses reported that several people were shot while others were kidnapped in the brazen attack.
A terrified motorist, who gave his name as Chinedu, recounted the ordeal:
“It was chaos. Gunmen suddenly appeared, shooting at vehicles. People were screaming, trying to escape. Some were shot while others were taken away. We saw them abduct travellers and there was nothing anyone could do.”
Another eyewitness added:
“Traffic had completely stopped. Everyone watched in horror as the kidnappers moved from car to car. They were well-armed and ruthless. I never thought I’d witness such a thing. They really abduct travellers Okada–Benin without fear of being caught.”
Local security sources confirmed that the attack left multiple casualties, though exact numbers are still being verified. The kidnappers reportedly targeted high-value vehicles and passengers, taking advantage of the heavy traffic and the slow-moving convoy.
One commuter, Ifeanyi, described the scene as surreal:
“It was like a movie. People were hiding under their vehicles and in the bushes. The gunmen were shouting and shooting. Sadly, many of us witnessed how they abduct travellers Okada–Benin, and it was horrifying.”
Authorities have urged travellers to avoid the Okada–Benin corridor until security forces restore normalcy, while investigations are ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims and apprehend the gunmen.
“Our teams are on the ground. We are working to ensure the safe return of those abducted. Citizens should remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements along the highway,” said a senior official.
The attack has once again raised serious concerns over security on major highways in the region and highlights the persistent threat posed by armed gangs preying on motorists.
