The United States Embassy has issued a security advisory warning that the US embassy terror threat may target American facilities and US-affiliated schools in Nigeria.
In a notice published on its official website on Monday, the embassy urged American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to take additional precautions when travelling to US diplomatic missions and affiliated institutions.
According to the advisory, the potential US embassy terror threat could affect the US Embassy in Abuja, the US Consulate General in Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the United States.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the statement said.
The embassy advised US nationals to remain vigilant, avoid predictable routines and vary their travel routes and times when visiting diplomatic offices and affiliated schools.
It also urged citizens to stay alert in public places, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, and always keep their mobile phones charged in case of emergencies.
The advisory further encouraged Americans to review their personal security plans and familiarize themselves with emergency exits whenever entering public buildings.
Although the embassy did not disclose the source of the threat, it stressed the need for heightened caution due to the potential US embassy terror threat facing its facilities and institutions in Nigeria.
The warning comes amid heightened global tensions following military confrontations involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which have triggered missile and drone attacks across parts of the Middle East.
The alert also follows protests in Lagos and some northern states by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria who condemned recent strikes involving the United States and Israel.
Security analysts say such geopolitical tensions sometimes raise security concerns for US interests in different parts of the world, prompting embassies to issue precautionary advisories to their citizens.
