US church shooting kills two, injures six others

Two people have died and six others were injured in a shooting outside a church in the United States.

The incident happened on Wednesday in Salt Lake City at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah, where a funeral was taking place.

According to Al Jazeera, police confirmed the shooting and said investigations are ongoing.

A manhunt has been launched, but no arrest has been made so far.

Police said the shooting did not appear to be random, but they do not believe it was an attack on a religious group.

The church confirmed there had been a confrontation outside the building before gunfire erupted.

“Out in the parking lot, there was some sort of altercation took place, and that’s when shots were fired,” church spokesperson Glen Mills said.

After the shooting, a large number of law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and helicopters were deployed.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the incident, saying it should never have happened near a place of worship or during a funeral.

The shooting occurred during a period of unrest in the United States, following the fatal shooting of a woman by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, which sparked protests against immigration enforcement under the Donald Trump administration.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole, was killed during an immigration operation.

Gun violence continues to be a major concern in the US, with thousands of people shot and many killed in 2025, although some cities recorded slight declines in incidents compared to previous years.US church shooting kills two, injures six others.
