A man who gorged himself on coins and metal objects was rumbled when surgeons checked his stomach and found 7kg of metal.
The 35-year-old had kept his bizarre eating habits to himself but surgeons found 263 coins, 100 nails and dozens of razor blades.
Maksud Khan was rushed into surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, with severe abdominal pains.
Dr Priyank Sharma, who led the surgical team, said: “The patient was complaining of stomach pain, so we thought of getting an endoscopy done. ‘We were shocked to discover coins, nails and nut-bolts in his stomach.” He said it was the first time he had seen anything like it in his career.
Mr Khan’s family think he began to eat metal objects after developing depression but said he did not inform anyone of his bizarre eating habits.
Doctors said Mr Khan worked as a driver and would often swallow coins given to him by customers. He had been complaining of stomach pains for three months, Metro reported.
Fortunately, doctors believe there will be no lasting damage to his internal organs. One of the doctors said: “The operation was done in the nick of the time as some of the nails lodged had pierced his stomach, caused bleeding and resulting in loss of haemoglobin.” Khan has told the doctors that he will never ingest metal again.
