Major broadband outage leaves UK without internet as thousands of TalkTalk users lose access, with services gradually restoring after widespread disruption

UK: Major broadband outage leaves thousands without internet

A major outage affecting TalkTalk left thousands of users across the UK without internet access on Wednesday morning, disrupting households and remote workers nationwide.

Data from Downdetector showed the problems began shortly after 7am, with reports quickly rising to over 5,300 within an hour. Most users said they could not access broadband services, even though their routers appeared to be working normally.

The majority of complaints, about 81%, were tied to broadband connectivity, with fewer reports linked to WiFi or mobile services.

Customers in several regions reported being offline, including Staffordshire, Shropshire and Glasgow. “Even though the online tool says status is correct. It’s not. No internet in Staffordshire area,” one user wrote, while another added: “No internet in Shropshire TF11.”

The disruption also affected people working from home. One frustrated customer asked: “What’s going on no internet, can’t get through on phones. How am I supposed to work?”

Access to TalkTalk’s website and support services was also impacted during the outage. A message on the site read: “Sorry, our site is currently unavailable… we’ll be back shortly”.

Some users pointed to possible DNS-related issues. “Their DNS Servers are not working – I think that’s the main issue,” one person wrote, suggesting switching to alternative servers such as “Google 8.8.8.8”. Others replied: “Nice, works for me too. You’ve saved the internet!” and “Can confirm this works.”

A customer in Wales also reported wider issues, saying: “Internet and wifi down in west wales, SA72… can’t even use the TalkTalk chat bot.”

By around 9am, outage reports had started to fall, with some users confirming their connections were restored. “Its back online now,” one user said, while another noted: “Finally back up in Essex.”

TalkTalk has not yet confirmed the cause of the disruption.
