UCL: Osimhen, Yilmaz goals secure Galatasaray spot in last 16

Victor Osimhen and Barış Alper Yılmaz scored in extra time to send Galatasaray into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Turkish side advanced 7-5 on aggregate despite losing 3-2 after extra time to Juventus in Turin.

Galatasaray arrived in Italy with a 5-2 first-leg lead. But Juventus fought back strongly at the Allianz Stadium.

Manuel Locatelli opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 37th minute. Federico Gatti added a second in the 70th minute. Weston McKennie then made it 3-0 in the 82nd minute to level the tie at 5-5 on aggregate.

Juventus played much of the second half with 10 men after Lloyd Kelly was sent off following a VAR review.

The game went into extra time.

Osimhen restored Galatasaray’s aggregate lead just before the break in extra time. He fired a low shot through goalkeeper Mattia Perin’s legs for his seventh goal of the campaign.

With Juventus pushing forward again, Yılmaz sealed the result late on with a counter-attacking goal.

“It was pretty absurd. He gets the ball, and then what’s he supposed to do? Us defenders are penalised too often in today’s football,” Gatti said after the match, reacting to the red-card decision that left Juventus a man down.

“Leaving that aside, it was a brilliant reaction. It’s disappointing that we were just tired when we got to extra time.

“It’s disappointing because these are the best matches to play; the Champions League is the best competition.”

According to Sofascore statistics, Juventus registered 28 shots and an expected goals tally of 5.04, compared to Galatasaray’s 16 attempts and 2.01 xG, highlighting the pressure the visitors absorbed on the night.

Galatasaray will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the round of 16.
