Iran has assured that Nigerians in Iran safe despite the escalating U.S.–Israel tensions in the Middle East, Nigeria’s envoy said on Thursday in Abuja.
At a news conference, Amb. Mahdavi Raja, Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, reiterated that since the outbreak of hostilities between Iran, the United States, and Israel, there have been no reports of harm to Nigerians in Iran living in major cities such as Tehran and Qom. He emphasised that Nigerians in Iran safe remains a priority for Iranian authorities as the crisis unfolds.
Raja explained that Iran’s military actions have been defensive, aimed at protecting its territory and population under international law, and do not target civilians or foreign nationals.
“The safety of foreign residents, including Nigerians, is a priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said, adding that Tehran’s actions are directed strictly at military installations.
The ambassador also highlighted that the escalation occurred during the culturally significant periods of Ramadan and Nowruz, but insisted that the security and well‑being of foreign residents, including Nigerians, have not been affected.
He further underlined the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between Iran and Nigeria, and said cooperation would continue in sectors such as energy, agriculture, education, and trade.

Raja urged Nigerians in Iran to remain calm and follow official guidance, stressing that there was currently no immediate threat to their safety. He also appealed to the international community to uphold peace and stability while recognising Iran’s legitimate right to defend its people and sovereignty.
The assurance comes as the Nigerian government says it is closely monitoring developments and has issued travel advisories for citizens in Iran and neighbouring Gulf states, while the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) coordinates support for Nigerians in the region.
