Toyota recalls 550,000 vehicles in US over seat defects

Toyota Motor Corporation is recalling 550,007 Highlander SUVs in the U.S. due to a seat-back defect that could raise the risk of injury in a crash, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Wednesday.

The recall covers certain 2021-2024 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models. NHTSA said, “The recliner assemblies in the second-row seats may not fully lock after seat back adjustment. A seat back that has not been secured in a locked position may fail to properly restrain occupants, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash at higher speeds.”

Toyota dealers will fix the issue at no cost by replacing the return springs in the seat recliner assemblies with improved components.

Owners are expected to receive notification letters in early May 2026. Vehicle owners can also check if their SUV is affected by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website.
