Tinubu could stay beyond two terms — Oluwo of Iwo

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has said Nigerians may eventually push for a constitutional amendment that would allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain in office beyond the constitutionally stipulated two terms.

The monarch made the remark in a congratulatory message to mark the President’s 74th birthday, describing Tinubu as a decisive leader whose policies are beginning to yield positive results. The statement was issued through his spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli.

According to the traditional ruler, the President’s leadership style and reform-driven approach could inspire calls from citizens for an extension of his tenure.

He noted that recent economic reforms introduced by the administration, including exchange rate unification, increased oil production, and improved foreign investment inflows, have started to stabilise key economic indicators.

The Oluwo also highlighted what he described as a significant rise in Nigeria’s foreign reserves, stating that it grew from about $1 billion to between $49.5 billion and $50.45 billion as of late February and March 2026.

Commending Tinubu’s governance approach, Akanbi praised ongoing reforms such as local government autonomy, which he said have strengthened grassroots administration and improved resource allocation.

He further lauded major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Road, describing them as critical to national development and economic expansion.

Emphasising the importance of strong leadership, the monarch stated that decisive action is a key trait of effective governance, noting that Tinubu has demonstrated courage in implementing difficult but necessary policies.

He expressed optimism that the next phase of the administration would deliver greater economic stability and improved living standards for Nigerians.
