Student hospitalised after injuries during Good Friday passion play in Uganda

A second-year law student of Kampala International University, Dennis Zziwa, has been hospitalised after sustaining injuries while portraying Jesus Christ during a Good Friday passion play in Uganda.

The incident occurred during the annual Way of the Cross reenactment held at Our Lady of Africa Church in Mbuya, where participants dramatise the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as part of Easter observances.

Witnesses said the performance, which involved intense and physically demanding scenes, took a distressing turn when Zziwa was subjected to repeated beatings as part of the act, leaving him injured.

He was immediately attended to by officials of the Red Cross who were present at the event and administered first aid before he was taken for further medical attention.

Following initial treatment at the venue, the student was transferred to a health facility in Luzira for proper care and observation.

The Good Friday procession, a long-standing Christian tradition, typically draws large crowds and features dramatic representations of biblical events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

However, the incident has raised concerns about safety measures during such reenactments, especially when participants are exposed to physically intense scenes.
