Sinners becomes most-nominated film in Oscar history, earns 16 nominations

Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic “Sinners” made Oscar history on Thursday, earning 16 Academy Award nominations, the highest total ever received by a single film.

The previous record of 14 nominations was shared by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” “Sinners” surpassed that mark and secured nods across the major categories, including best picture, best director, and best screenplay for Coogler, as well as a best actor nomination for Michael B. Jordan, his first in the category.

The film’s achievement is notable not only for the number of nominations but also for its genre. Horror films rarely earn such wide recognition at the Oscars, making “Sinners” one of the most surprising and historic frontrunners this year.

Coogler, known for films like “Fruitvale Station” and “Black Panther,” called the nominations a personal milestone. He said he wrote the film in memory of his late uncle.

“I wrote this script for my uncle who passed away 11 years ago,” Coogler said. “I got to imagine that he’s listening to some blues music right now to celebrate.”

When reached by phone after the 2026 Oscar nominations were announced, Coogler told The Associated Press he was still processing the news.

“I love making movies. I’m honored to wake up every day and do it,” he said. “I was writing last night. That’s why I didn’t get too much sleep. Honestly, bro, I still feel a little bit asleep right now.”

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
