President Tinubu approves YABATECH conversion to university

President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a full-fledged university, marking a major milestone for Nigeria’s oldest tertiary institution.

During a visit to YABATECH on February 12, 2025, Dr. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, announced the decision. He reassured staff and students that the federal government remains committed to strengthening technical and vocational education.

“President Tinubu acted quickly on this approval, he fully understands how essential technical education is for national development. Right now, I am waiting for the memo and other necessary protocols.” Mamman stated.

Since its establishment in 1947, YABATECH has trained thousands of professionals. Over the years, many stakeholders pushed for its upgrade, arguing that the institution’s facilities and faculty already meet university standards.

Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, the institution’s rector, expressed his appreciation for the decision.

“This upgrade has been our dream for years. We don’t just want a new status, we want to become a center of excellence,” he said.

With over 200 PhD holders on staff, YABATECH already has the capacity to function as a university. The transition will introduce more research opportunities, improve facilities, and expand career prospects for students.

Because the government aims to prioritize technology-driven education, the minister highlighted the urgency of equipping Nigerian youths with skills in AI, robotics, and software development.

“With the right training, our graduates will secure jobs with international firms, earn foreign exchange, and reduce the need to relocate abroad,” Mamman added.

Many industry experts and alumni welcomed the move. Tunde Babalola, a former student, shared his excitement;

“This should have happened years ago! YABATECH has led technical education in Nigeria, and now it will finally receive the recognition and resources of a university.”

Students also expressed enthusiasm, believing the YABATECH conversion to a university will enhance their degrees and increase job opportunities.

Moving forward, the National Assembly must pass a bill to finalize the transition before the president signs it into law.

Once the process is complete, YABATECH will officially join Nigeria’s specialized universities, strengthening the country’s focus on innovation and technical education.

For students and faculty, this transformation goes beyond a name change, it signals a new era of opportunities, innovation, and global competitiveness.
