President Ferdinand Marcos denies cocaine use accusations made by his sister, Senator Imee Marcos, calling the claims baseless amid corruption probes.

Philippine president, Marcos, denies sister’s cocaine use accusation

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday denied accusations from his sister, Senator Imee Marcos, who claimed he has long struggled with drug addiction, including cocaine use, and suggested it has affected his governance.

The president’s office dismissed the allegations as “recycled claims that have long been disproven.” Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the senator’s statements may be politically motivated.

“Sen. Imee should act as a patriot, support investigations, and condemn all corruption,” Castro said, urging her not to shield alleged offenders.

The claims come amid an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption in flood-control projects, which reportedly involved lawmakers receiving kickbacks for contracts that were substandard, incomplete, or never built.

In a speech at a Manila rally, Sen. Imee said her brother’s drug use began during their father’s presidency and continues today. She also claimed it has affected his health and leadership.

Rep. Sandro Marcos, the president’s son, called the accusations “baseless and dangerously irresponsible” and said they were aimed at advancing political ambitions.

Without citing evidence, the senator suggested the alleged addiction contributed to corruption and poor decision-making. She addressed officials, saying, “I’m not his enemy. His enemy is himself.”

The president previously dismissed similar claims by former President Rodrigo Duterte, noting that private hospital and police laboratory tests in 2021 showed negative results for cocaine and methamphetamine.
