Twenty-five members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have defected to the Accord Party, deepening the political realignment in the state.
The development means PDP loses grip on Osun Assembly following the lawmakers’ decision to align with Governor Ademola Adeleke, who left the PDP for Accord in December 2025 ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The lawmakers announced their defection on Friday after a parliamentary meeting. In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, the legislators said they resolved to join the governor in the Accord Party after consultations with supporters and stakeholders.
According to the statement, the lawmakers proceeded to the Banquet Hall to meet with the governor and leaders of the Accord Party, where the Speaker formally declared their defection. They reaffirmed their support for Adeleke and pledged continued commitment to representation, transparency and responsive leadership.
Tiamiyu said the members had resigned from the PDP weeks earlier. He explained that after what he described as deep reflection and consultations, they concluded that Accord offered a platform through which they could continue to serve the people of the state.

With the latest move, PDP loses grip on Osun Assembly, as 25 of the 26 members are now in the Accord Party. The shift leaves Mr Femi Popoola of the All Progressives Congress as the only opposition lawmaker in the House.
The defecting lawmakers said their decision was aimed at ensuring continuity in governance and sustaining development efforts across Osun State. They also urged their supporters to remain calm and join them in what they called a new political chapter.
The mass defection marks a significant consolidation of power for the governor within the legislature, coming months after his own exit from the PDP. It also reshapes the balance of power in the Assembly ahead of the forthcoming governorship poll.
As political alignments continue to evolve in the state, PDP loses grip on Osun Assembly, signalling a major shift in Osun’s legislative landscape.
