Oman has signed an agreement with Airbus Defence and Space to design, build, and launch its first communications satellite, OMANSAT-1, marking a major step in the Sultanate’s space ambitions.
OMANSAT-1 will provide high-capacity communications services across Oman and extend coverage to parts of the Middle East, East Africa, and Asia. The satellite, based on Airbus’ OneSat platform, can be reconfigured digitally in orbit, allowing Oman to adjust coverage and services as needed.

“The project aims to enhance the digital sovereignty of the Sultanate of Oman by possessing a national space infrastructure capable of providing communications and data services independently and securely,” said Oman’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Engineer Saeed bin Hamoud al Maawali. He added that it will improve connectivity in rural areas and support the country’s digital transformation under Oman Vision 2040.
Space Communications Technologies SPC, owned by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), will operate the satellite and coordinate with Airbus throughout its development and launch.
