National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that the long-anticipated increase in monthly allowances will take effect from February 2025. The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, announced while addressing the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Stream II corps members in Katsina State.
He says the new ₦77,000 allowance has been included in the 2025 Federal Government budget. While the increment was not implemented in January, he assured corps members that once the budget is officially passed, they will receive the updated payment next month.
“This month (January) has already ended, but once the budget is approved, corps members will start receiving ₦77,000 instead of the usual ₦33,000,” he stated.
This announcement sparks excitement among serving and prospective corps members, as the allowance hike is expected to ease financial challenges during their service year. The NYSC scheme, established to promote national integration and youth development, plays a crucial role in bridging cultural and regional differences across Nigeria.
Brigadier General Ahmed also reassured corps members about their security, emphasizing that the NYSC would not deploy them to locations with security threats. He stressed that their safety remains a priority, and all postings will be carefully reviewed to ensure they are sent to safe environments.
“We will not post corps members to areas facing security challenges. Wherever we assign them, they should be confident that the location has been assessed and deemed safe for service,” he added.
While corps members eagerly await the implementation of the new allowance, many see this as a positive step toward improving their welfarecand making service year more comfortable
