The Prelate Emeritus, Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, says Christians can no longer distance themselves from politics if the country must have a positive change of fortune.
He said it was high time Christians got involved in politics and took their fate into their own hands.
Failure of Christians to participate in politics, Makinde warned, would continue to make them victims of irresponsible governance, which they would have no control over.
The cleric argued that “it is not a sin for Christians to take an active part in politics.”
Makinde said this on Monday in his sermon at the 65th birthday celebration of the Prelate, Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Samuel Kanu Uche.
The event held at the Methodist Cathedral of Peace and Excellence, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos.
In attendance was the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Uguru, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari; the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by the Chaplain of the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja, Pastor Oluseyi Malomo, and the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Religious Matters, Revd. Kolawole Verralls.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Chief Yetunde Onanuga; and her Benue State counterpart, Mr. Benson Abounu.
Other dignitaries in attendance included the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran; a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), and Senator Florence Ita-Giwa.
In his goodwill message, Osinbajo described the celebrant, Uche, as a model Christian, whose love for the country was not in doubt.
In the goodwill message delivered on his behalf by Malomo, the Vice-President said, “Your Eminence has been a model of a true Christian. Your love for the nation and our people is not in doubt as you have boldly and consistently called for unity in words and indeed over the years since you heeded the call of God to serve the Church.
“We believe that our God Almighty appointed you for such a time as this and will grant you the grace to continue in service to Him and humanity.”
Also speaking through Verralls, Ambode, said, “We thank you for the role you have continued to play in promoting inter-faith tolerance and understanding which has been largely responsible for the relative peace being experienced in Lagos State.”
In his own remark, the Benue State deputy governor, who is a member of the church, eulogized the incumbent Prelate for his commitment to his pastoral job.
