Nigeria’s progress depends on responsible media — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors and media professionals to exercise their influence responsibly, stressing that the nation’s progress and democratic stability depend largely on a credible and ethical press.

The conference, themed “Guarding Democracy: The Role of the Editor in Ensuring Credible Election and Good Governance,” drew editors, senior journalists, and communication experts from across the country, who deliberated on the media’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Speaking at the 2025 Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Annual Conference held in Abuja on Thursday, President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged editors to use the power of the pen to promote unity, accountability, and development rather than division and misinformation.

He noted that the media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion, adding that responsible journalism remains essential to the sustenance of democracy.

“The media wields enormous power to inform, educate, and influence. It is therefore incumbent upon journalists to use that power wisely, to strengthen democracy, build national cohesion, and promote truth over sensationalism,” Tinubu said.

The President commended the Nigerian Guild of Editors for its continued commitment to professionalism and its contributions to national discourse, urging journalists to continue upholding the principles of fairness, accuracy, and integrity in their reporting.

Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s respect for press freedom and constructive criticism, saying government policies thrive best in an environment where facts are reported truthfully and responsibly.

“Freedom of the press is the cornerstone of democracy, but it must go hand in hand with accountability and ethical responsibility,” he added.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information emphasised that the Federal Government remains committed to fostering an enabling environment for media practitioners, promising continuous engagement between the government and the press on national issues.
