Nigeria’s commitment to fortifying its ties with China, notably in the domains of infrastructure, trade, finance, and energy, has been reaffirmed by President Bola Tinubu.
The president of Nigeria highlighted the developing collaboration between the two nations and voiced confidence for rising bilateral commerce, which reached $22.6 billion last year, in an opinion piece that was published in China Daily on September 5, 2024.
Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s and China’s common assets, pointing out that both countries have sizable economies, abundant natural and human resources, and unique cultural legacies.
“My administration is committed to strengthening relations on infrastructure, trade, finance, and energy.”
“China is a very significant player in Nigeria’s infrastructural development, particularly in the transportation sector” As Tinubu put it.
He mentioned important initiatives such as the Lagos-Ibadan Railway, where it is anticipated that future cooperation on the Ibadan-Abuja-Kaduna-Kano segment will further improve connectivity and spur economic growth.
The president also recognized the role that transportation infrastructure plays in spurring economic growth.
“Transport infrastructure is one of the primary agents of development as it facilitates the movement of people and goods, connects buyers and sellers, and opens up channels of investments, creating jobs and opportunities down the line,” said he.
As a possible example for upcoming e-mobility improvements in Africa, he cited the LAGRIDE initiative, a collaboration between Lagos State and CIG Motors.
Tinubu conveyed praise for President Xi Jinping’s leadership and attributed China’s emergence as a global economic leader to Xi’s vision.
He highlighted Nigeria’s attempts to revive its economy and put it on a road toward sustainable growth, drawing comparisons between the audacious changes carried out in both countries.
As the head of Africa’s biggest economy, Tinubu said, “I am aware of the rare facility and efforts required to lead a great nation like China.”
It is anticipated that the president of Nigeria’s trip to China and his involvement in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will further the already solid diplomatic relations between his country and China.
Tinubu expressed assurance that his interactions with the Chinese leadership at the event will result in greater cooperation and advantageous outcomes for both parties.
Nigeria is actively pursuing its “Renewed Hope” strategy, which centers on enhanced infrastructure and economic regeneration. The alliance with China is viewed as essential to accomplishing these objectives.
Nigeria hopes to use Chinese investment and experience in commerce, transportation, and energy to propel long-term development.
Nigeria and China are both positioned to play important roles in determining the future of international trade and infrastructure development in Africa and beyond, so this renewed commitment to strengthening Nigeria-China relations comes at a time of tremendous global challenges and opportunity.
