The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has rejected an alleged order by a Kano Magistrate’s Court directing two TikTok creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to marry within 60 days.
STREETNET reports that the Kano court order was linked to viral videos showing the pair in romantic scenes that the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board described as “indecent” and contrary to the state’s moral and religious values.
Reacting to the development, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe condemned the alleged directive. He said it showed “a grave misunderstanding of judicial authority under the Nigerian Constitution” and violated the individuals’ fundamental rights.
Osigwe explained that marriage is a voluntary union between consenting adults. He added that it should never be imposed as punishment, moral correction, or judicial remedy.

The NBA maintained that no Nigerian court has the power to compel marriage. It described the Kano court order as unconstitutional and a breach of the rights to liberty, dignity, and privacy guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In addition, the association called for an immediate review of the case. It directed its Citizens’ Liberties Committee and Women’s Forum to monitor the matter and protect the individuals’ rights.
The NBA also urged judges to respect constitutional limits. It said the courts must remain defenders of justice and freedom, not tools for enforcing social or moral conformity.
