Two months after it was formed to handle the ongoing issue in the Nigeria Basketball Federation, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been disbanded by the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development (FMYSD) (NBBF)
Following the ongoing leadership split in the Nigeria Basketball Federation, the FG withdrew Nigeria from all international basketball competitions for two years in May 2022. The FG justified the move as part of its efforts to revitalise basketball from the ground up and put an end to the crises that had rocked the NBBF.
A 10-man committee appointed to manage the nation’s basketball leagues was one of the steps used to resolve the situation.
The Federal Government’s decision to reverse the removal of Nigeria Basketball from the international stage and reinstate the NBBF, the Ministry declared in a statement signed by its Director of Press & Public Relations, Mohammed Mohammed, that the IMC is no longer required and is disbanded with immediate effect.
“You may recall that the federal government had reason to establish an Interim Management Committee (IMC) on June 4, 2022, following Nigeria’s two-year hiatus from international tournaments, in order to handle the ongoing crisis in the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
“Consequently, with the federal government’s rescission from its earlier withdrawal of Nigeria Basketball from the International scene and relisting the NBBF, beginning from Nigeria’s participation in FIBA basketball world cup 2023 Africa qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, the continuation of the IMC is no longer necessary.
“The federal ministry of youth and sports development hereby announces the dissolution of the Interim Management Committee for Nigeria Basketball with immediate effect.
“The ministry in the same connection, wishes to thank the chairman and members of the now defunct committee for their invaluable services to the Basketball family and the federal republic of Nigeria.”
