The Swiss-Nigerian player Manuel Obafemi Akanji has been signed by the English football team Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund.
Before joining City, the centre back had not played for Dortmund this season and was in the final year of his contract. He has since signed a five-year contract with City.
On Thursday, September 1, Akanji, 27, said on the club website: “I am thrilled to be here and can’t wait to get started.
“City have been one of the best teams in Europe over the last few seasons. They are brilliant to watch, play an exciting brand of football and compete for trophies year in, year out, so coming here feels like the perfect next step in my career.

“Pep Guardiola is an exceptional manager and this is an exceptional squad of players, so this is an exciting opportunity for me.
“I am really looking forward to testing myself in the Premier League and I will do everything I can to help this Club be successful.”
Although City already has four senior centre backs on its roster, Aymeric Laporte has yet to play this year due to injury. Guardiola has thus far in 2022–23 employed Nathan Ake, Ruben Dias, and John Stones.
Akanji moved to Dortmund from Basel in 2018 and has been a regular member of the first team ever since. Last season, he participated in 36 games across all competitions.
Akanji joins Kalvin Phillips, Stefan Ortega, Sergio Gomez, and Erling Haaland as City’s fifth summer additions.
