Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal compares Liverpool to F1 car stuck in rush hour traffic after his side slow down top-four aspirations for Reds
Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal compared Liverpool to an F1 car stuck in rush hour traffic after his tactics slowed down their pursuit of a top four spot.
Carvalhal’s side frustrated the Reds and held on for all three points through Alfie Mawson’s first-half strike.
After the final whistle, the new Swans boss elaborated on the analogy he used this week when explaining how his team needed to play to beat Liverpool.
He told Sky Sports: ‘I did an analogy with my players about this game. I said Liverpool is a really top team but they are like a F1 car.
“If you put a Formula 1 car in London in 4 o’clock traffic, the car will not run very fast. And that is exactly what we had to do against Liverpool. Put them to play the way they don’t like.
“They have a principle of when they lose the ball, they do very strong pressing. My players were ready for that. All the time, we played one-two touch with all the time with support and then we play it to the sides to be without the pressure.”
Carvalhal continued: “It’s why, especially in first half, we achieved some moments when we were near the goal. We had the fortune to score the goal.
‘After, you understand we were playing against a strong team and my team need points. It is not exactly the way we wish to play, but the circumstances of winning against a strong team, we need the points. My players were brave and achieved a very important three points.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men lacked the time and space to carve up Swansea and had relatively few opportunities in the game.
Roberto Firmino headed onto the post late on but Liverpool came unstuck as Carvalhal’s tactics of slowing down the usually rapid and incisive visiting attack came to fruition.
