Aboki iron condemn, abandoned aircraft

Lagos: Update for Aboki iron condemn, netizen reacts over abandoned aircraft

An abandoned aircraft sitting along the busy Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos has triggered widespread debate after a video of the plane went viral on social media.

The footage, first shared by Instablog9ja, shows the rusting aircraft lying idle by the roadside, raising questions about its ownership, purpose, and why it has been left to decay. The clip has since attracted thousands of reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing a mix of curiosity, humour, and frustration.

Some netizens described the sight as another case of wasted infrastructure, lamenting that such a massive object could be neglected for years. Others joked that the aircraft might soon be dismantled and sold off by scrap dealers — popularly referred to in Nigerian street slang as “Aboki Iron Condemn.”

“What’s the story behind this? If it was another country, they would have turned it into a landmark or even a restaurant,” one user commented. Another teased, “Before long, Aboki condemned iron will recycle this into roofing sheets.”

Although unverified, some accounts claim the aircraft was moved to the location as far back as 2006, with suggestions that it was once earmarked for conversion into a restaurant before plans reportedly collapsed. There have also been unconfirmed reports linking the aircraft to private individuals, though no official ownership has been established.

As at press time, neither Lagos State authorities nor aviation regulators have issued a statement on the abandoned aircraft or its future.

The viral video has, however, reignited concerns about asset management in Nigeria, with many Nigerians questioning why valuable structures are left to waste instead of being repurposed for tourism, training, or business ventures.
