Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu, is set to launch the OMI EKO Project tomorrow, October 17, 2025, a transformative initiative aimed at improving water transportation across the state.
The project, spearheaded by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is supported by €410 million in funding through the Global Gateway Initiative, backed by the European Union, the French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.
OMI EKO is designed to enhance commuter experience and efficiency across Lagos waterways. Key components of the project include:

A new fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries, accommodating between 50 and 200 passengers.
Modern terminals and floating jetties, including both upgrades to existing facilities and construction of new ones.
Dredging and channel works to open and stabilize approximately 140 km of waterways across 15 routes.
Digital ticketing and smart terminals for faster boarding and seamless commuter experience.
Strengthened safety measures, regulatory oversight, and capacity building under LASWA’s supervision.
The project will be implemented in phases over the next six years, with the aim of modernizing Lagos’ waterways and providing safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation options for residents and visitors alike.
