The Lagos State Government has ordered an immediate suspension of all reclamation projects across the state, citing serious environmental and safety concerns.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the directive affects all projects—whether or not they have obtained Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval or drainage clearance.
According to the ministry, the proliferation of reclamation activities in areas including Parkview, Banana Island, Osborne, Victoria Island Extension, Lekki, Ajah, Oworonshoki, Ikorodu, Ojo and Badagry poses major risks. These include flooding, coastal erosion, loss of wetlands and biodiversity, water pollution, and disruption of fishing livelihoods.
“The State cannot afford to allow this indiscriminate reclamation of lagoons, wetlands and floodplains to continue unabated,” Wahab said, warning that defaulters risk arrest and prosecution.

The government has given a 7-day ultimatum for compliance. Approved projects must be re-submitted for documentation and monitoring, while ongoing and proposed projects must undergo proper EIA processes with drainage clearance.
Failure to comply, the ministry warned, will result in the decommissioning of reclaimed sites, excavation of filled land, reopening of blocked water channels, and prosecution of those involved.
“Enough is enough,” Wahab declared.
