The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirms two deaths and 20 survivors in the Lagos building collapse at 54 Cole Street, Oyingbo, following a coordinated rescue operation.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that two people died while 20 others were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed on Monday at 54 Cole Street, Oyingbo, Lagos State.

In a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday, NEMA said its Lagos Operations Office coordinated a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other rescue services.

“Upon arrival, emergency teams discovered several occupants trapped beneath the debris. After several hours of intensive operations, 20 persons were rescued alive, while those with injuries were promptly taken to nearby hospitals. Sadly, two fatalities were confirmed,” the statement read.

The agency said all residents were accounted for after the Lagos building collapse, adding that the site was cleared under police supervision to ensure safety and order.

NEMA also disclosed that the structure had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), but occupants allegedly ignored evacuation warnings.

“Preliminary assessment revealed that the collapsed structure had been previously marked for demolition by LASBCA, but occupants reportedly ignored the evacuation directive,” NEMA stated.

The agency urged residents to comply with safety and demolition notices to avoid further tragedies linked to Lagos building collapse incidents.
