The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the defection of former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as a major political development capable of reshaping the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party said Kwankwaso’s move represents more than a routine political switch, stressing that it signals the emergence of a broader coalition aimed at offering Nigerians a credible alternative ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The statement, signed by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, noted that the development reflects a growing consensus among political leaders and citizens on the need for a new direction in the country.
According to Abdullahi, Kwankwaso has also urged members of his political movement and supporters across the country to align with the ADC, a move the party said has already begun to yield results.
“In the last 24 hours alone, the ADC’s online registration platform has recorded a significant increase in new members, indicating that more Nigerians are embracing a different path forward,” the statement read.
The party further revealed that several prominent political figures were present to witness the defection, including National Chairman, Senator David Mark; National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; and members of the National Working Committee.

Also in attendance were leading presidential aspirants such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. Other notable figures included former Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
ADC said the presence of these political heavyweights underscores a growing commitment to building a united front capable of challenging existing power structures in future elections.
“Senator Kwankwaso’s decision speaks to what many Nigerians already feel, that the country needs leadership that understands the everyday challenges of its people and is ready to take responsibility for addressing them,” Abdullahi added.
The party reaffirmed its resolve to strengthen its national structure and expand its support base as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.
