Kastina: Despite peace agreement, bandits kill two, abduct 50 women

Barely weeks after a reported peace agreement, residents of Chibauna community in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State were thrown into fear and chaos as suspected bandits launched a deadly raid late Sunday.

The attackers killed two people and abducted more than 50 women, authorities confirmed.

In addition to the human toll, the assailants reportedly rustled a large number of livestock, including cattle and sheep, during the brazen attack.

Confirming the incident in an interview with BBC Hausa Service monitored on Monday night, local councillor Malam Abdurasheed described how the bandits invaded the village, shooting sporadically and creating panic among residents.

“Two people were killed in the attack, while several others sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital,” he said.

Malam Abdurasheed also noted that although over 50 women were initially abducted, some managed to escape and returned safely to the community.

Appealing to security agencies for urgent action, he called on the military and other relevant authorities to intensify operations in the area.

“We urge security forces to intervene immediately to prevent further attacks and secure the release of those still in captivity,” he said.

The latest attack has sparked renewed fears among residents and raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of the recent peace agreement.

Many locals worry that the fragile security situation in parts of Katsina State may continue to deteriorate if immediate and decisive measures are not taken.

With communities already on edge, authorities face mounting pressure to restore safety and prevent further loss of lives and abductions in this troubled region.
